What is Metaphysics

What Is Metaphysics?

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the first principles of life—the nature of reality, being, knowing, cause, substance, identity, time, and space. Originally, the term metaphysics was used to describe Aristotle’s teachings that went beyond physics, addressing First Cause, universals and particulars, and the underlying intelligence behind creation.

Over time, metaphysics expanded beyond philosophy alone. It became an inquiry into what lies behind appearances, asking not only what is, but why it is.

At its heart, metaphysics seeks to understand the nature of reality, both visible and invisible, and how the Principles of the Universe apply directly to our lives.

Where Do We Begin?

If you are here for the same reason I am, you are seeking answers to the most basic and timeless question:

Who am I?

I personally believe that it is all metaphysics. Everything we touch, see, feel, think, and believe arises from metaphysical principles. Both science and metaphysics study reality—science through observable effects, and metaphysics through underlying causes.

Science is knowledge of facts organized around proven principles. Take electricity as an example. No one has ever seen electricity itself, yet we know it exists because we can use it. From an unseen force, we receive light, heat, and power. We understand its laws, and by applying them, we obtain definite results.

In the same way, no one has ever seen the great causes behind life itself, yet we know they exist because we can use them. When applied consciously, these principles produce observable results in our experience.

Metaphysics and First Cause

Metaphysics has long explored whether reality exists beyond experience, as Plato taught, or whether experience itself constitutes reality, as argued by thinkers such as Kant and Hume. It also asks whether existence is made of one substance or many, and whether life unfolds by chance or by law.

At Metaphysics for Modern Living.com, we view metaphysics as the study of everything God, or Universal Mind, has provided. It is the study of Mental Science and the Natural Laws of the Universe. It seeks to explain First Cause, our existence, and what has long been considered unexplained.

If religion did not work for you—or if, after many sincere attempts, your life has not changed, and you still find yourself living day to day without clear direction—then you are in the right place. I have been there too.

Here, we apply spiritual understanding for a complete awareness of our true nature. Human beings and societies create rules and systems, but these must not be confused with the Natural Laws of the Universe. Metaphysics concerns itself with those laws. Once understood and applied, they provide practical tools for meaningful and lasting change.

In the Beginning

“In the beginning, God.”

In the beginning, there was Spirit alone—no form, no manifest universe. Spirit was All-Inclusive, Infinite, and Everywhere Present. For Spirit to create, It must be self-knowing. Therefore, Spirit is not only All-Present but All-Knowing.

Spirit moves upon Itself, creating out of Itself all that is made. What we see comes from what we do not see. As Scripture reminds us, “The things that are seen are not made of the things which do appear.”

The only possible operation of intelligence is thought—the Word. All things were made by the Word, and without it nothing was made. Each life and each form is a unique expression of that Word coming into manifestation.

Spirit needs nothing to help It. It speaks, and it is done.

Aristotle once said

Aristotle said, “All Men by nature desire to know.” This profound statement still holds today.

Why Metaphysics Matters

What is Metaphysics and why should you care Frank L. Hammer {1945} Life and its Mysteries, when asked “What Is Man?” he answered:

“Man is an immortal spirit temporarily inhabiting a material body. This body is no more the real man than are the clothes he wears to cover it. To understand man, it is necessary to study vastly more than his outer form. Men are begotten by God, and children of God are gods, just as offspring of animals are animals.” So, then what is Metaphysics? It’s the study of evolution, why are we here, what is our purpose, and is this all that there is? All Spiritual Teachers know this. It is not by accident that there are enormous amounts of information on Metaphysics. We are waking up to the fact that we are more. As science gets more sophisticated, we learn that we are not bound by man’s laws, that in fact the Laws of the Universe are quite real and are here for a reason. Lets not get lost on our journey of Self- Discovery. The internet opens us up to a wealth of information. If you want to be Enlighten or just want to stop the suffering, we go through as humans, then associate with those who have what you want. Read authors who inspire you. The only thing that limits us is our belief in what we think is impossible. Open up to the inspiring minds of our peers, and then we will see peace and happiness become a way of life. My page Site Map for Life will help you navigate this site and open you up to topics and tools that will open your eyes to the possibilities you seek. This is a teaching website. If you study, it you will be rewarded.

Ernest Holmes

Ernest Holmes, Founder of Science of Mind

—and my mentor—wrote:

“THE TIME HAS COME TO KNOW THE TRUTH.”

“The hour of freedom has struck, the bell of Liberty is ringing… Let us plunge more deeply into our own nature and into the nature of the Universe, and we shall find treasures undreamed of, possibilities never imagined, and opportunities long sought.

‘Prove me now herewith,’ saith the Lord of Hosts, ‘if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing so great there shall not be room enough to receive it.’”

The Science of Mind Perspective

Ernest Holmes, founder of Science of Mind, expressed it this way:

“There is a power in the universe which acts as though it were intelligent—and we may assume that it is.
There is an activity in the universe which acts as law.
And there is a formless substance forever taking form and forever changing its form.”

From this, we recognize a threefold nature of Being:

  • Spirit as the conscious, knowing Power

  • Soul (Law) as the medium of action

  • Body (Form) as the result

Spirit is the only conscious actor. Law is impersonal and exact, responding to the Word spoken into it. Form is the visible result. One Power alone acts, expressing through law into form.
